Why you need to talk to your child about AI nudify apps even if they don’t have a smart phone yet
We are delaying smart phones in our family but that doesn’t mean we don’t talk about the spectrum of good and less savoury things that can be accessed on phones and apps. According to the NSPCC by 13 at least 50% of boys have seen porn. Even outside of actual porn there is so much sexualised content online that kids can easily come across. And things that once they see, they can’t unsee. They might see content that gives them a warped view of what healthy relationships look like. You only need to listen the debate about the themes from the show ‘Adolescence’ that blew up a few months ago to realise there is so much harmful content that kids are accessing and being influenced by.
It’s highly likely my 12 year old will soon start to get curious or might see something on someone else’s phone so it’s important that we have on going conversations on these topics.
We have talked about sextortion and what that is and how that happens. We have talked about the increasing number of AI nudify and deepfake apps that are finding their way onto teen phones.
Talking about all the things I mentioned above at home and the fact his school also talks about these things with the pupils is so important. No smart phone doesn’t mean you don’t have these kinds of conversations. And if your kid does have a smart phone than these conversations have even more importance. Kids also need to know that they will never be in trouble for coming to you and telling you about something they have seen.
